“Eating is an Agricultural Act?” The Ethics of Food and Eating

Description

  •

In this project we dove into where the food we eat comes from and the process in which it goes through to get to our tables. We also went over common misconceptions and tricks that big farm companies use to make their products look more appealing. Such as putting photos of a red barn and green grass on their products. When the food is mostly manufactured and produced out of a factory. After researching the food making process we took a look at our own food ethic and then created an easy to display some of the important food ethics we possess.

Reflection

I found it really interesting to study the ethics of food and the chemistry of food at the same time however I didn't feel as though there was a lot of crossover between the two. To me personally it seemed as though the food was the only common denominator and I think that if I was to do this project over again I would have looked more into how cooking with processed food differs from cooking with homegrown ingredients.

I have always been pretty conches of the food that I eat and am lucky to have a family that is as well. This has kind of been something that was always on my radar. My stepmom actually sat down and watched food inc with me when I was 13. It was really nice to get a refresher on it and some new details and I ended up using this project as an outlet to share more information with my mom about the importance of healthy eating since we don't always get the best food due to pricing mainly. However I think it's really important for people to understand where their food is coming from and that's why I did my final project as an informative solutions guide. Since from the big picture it can be really overwhelming and oftentimes you don't know what to do or what next steps to follow so I wanted to give people some options. I wanted to give people the opportunity to improve their own food ethic.

For me personally the project that I had originally intended to do in a lot of ways got flipped on its head due to covide-19. Through this project we discovered our own personal philosophies and then designed a project to represent them my philosophy is that everyone should do their best to lift up the people around them. I believe we should try to lift up others even the ones that we don’t know and don’t get along with. So my original project was going to be posting inspirational messages around the schools in my community however due to COVID-19 this possibility quickly became impossible so instead I turn to social media posting public comments that are meant to lift up and inspire others.

Reflection

I believe that the most important thing I learned through this process was that sometimes things happen that you can’t account for and when they do you just have to roll with it. The whole switch up with my project really threw me for a loop because I was very in love with the idea, I had seen it happening around my school and all the joy it brought and wanted to bring it to the community. When I learned that I couldn’t do this anymore I was a bit at a loss until I met with my teacher and we discuss possible options. It’s not me that things may not always look the way that you want them to but that’s not necessarily a bad thing sometimes things change and you just have to make the best of it.

Moving forward I hope that I will be able to see my plan through one day when all the madness has ended and normal life starts to resume. Although by posting positive messages online I still get to lift others up I won't get to reach as many people or have the anonymous quality that I was hoping for in this project.so getting out of the larger community hopefully next year would be really meaningful.

Why Animas Video Outline
Personal Connection Essay

The project that I made was a video that would be used to market Animas high school. The video was about why students should attend Animas high school. I represented this by showing images and videos of the positive sides of animals and also having student testimonials to voice over the images. However, I didn't have the best time at the exhibition this is mainly due to the lack of people that actually came and talked to me about my project I only got one person other than my parents who came to watch my video. This person was the parent of my best friend. So at a certain point, I decided to walk around and listen to the presenters. I left my project set up and ready in case any parents happened to stumble along and listen however due to the separation of my from the main exhibition room could have cultivated this separation.

I don't feel as though my perspective has actually changed all that much since I found it really hard to find credible sources that actually represented the other side well. I also found most of the research that I did concerning the best education systems for the most part matched with Animases education practices.  This higher education standard that animals has definitely set animals apart on the local level. Signaling it out as having the best educational system in Durango and possibly in la Plata county when compared to other high schools. However this would take a very long time to deduce since it requires educated individuals who know the aspects that make up the best education systems to one at a time.

I understand that I definitely value relationships with people and being creative. And that the other side values the other side more of just has an overall misconception about what the school may offer or really be about. I also noticed that I don't follow all of my party's politics and that there are only a couple policies that I definitely relate with however it came to my attention that there was very little I knew about their other policies. Or even the policies that affect me locally. It was always something that I viewed as unnecessary however what I failed to realize and fully comprehend is that that is part of being apart of my democracy and that where I can really see my voice making a difference and having a lot of impacts. Something that I was educated about while learning about the political system of our country through the lens and focus of an education.

I learned the democracy that we have can generally be very divisive. Learned that the system naturally sets us up to take opposing sides and that there are so many conditions that keep people's voices unheard such as jerry mentoring. It made me rethink how flawed our democracy is, and since my project focuses on education.

I found that democracy is meant to be led or influenced by an educated populace. The democracy that our country was designed for was built on one of these characteristics. Without an educated populace, the voting process becomes so much harder to undergo this also became obvious to me when going over the blue book last year during the midterms. That content was incredibly hard to understand and I had to research multiple issues presented.

I think that I just have more respect and patients when it comes to the other side's views. There are different ways that I would go about communicating with them and other things that I would like to focus on throughout this process. Although when it comes to the actual beliefs that I hold, I don't think that this experience let me have different views about any of my solid beliefs all stayed the same. I did get a deeper understanding of some topics that I don't really focus on.

I feel as though most of the things that we see in today's society is more based off of rhetoric than anything else. This is definitely the case when it comes to the media and news whereas the focus more on trying to convince the audience of something rather than giving the truth. In our current day and age however, there are very few people that actually exhibit this willingness to be disturbed. We have been thoroughly convinced of the opinions that we hold that we refuse to hear other people's perspectives. In fact, they are so convinced of some of these falsehoods and things that they have been told that they ignore and refuse to hear facts. This is incredibly apparent when you consider how many people there are that deny the fact of climate change.
